Breastfeeding!

Two weeks ago, Katie had her first go at NNS, non-nutritive sucking. I pumped first, and basically tried to get her to use me as a pacifier. It didn't work, she just held her breath the whole time and desatted!

We didn't try again (scheduling issues with the lactation consultant, me being sick, etc) until yesterday. She tried nutritive breastfeeding for the first time. She latched on perfectly and had her first meal "straight from the tap"! I am so proud of her!

Seven Pounds!

Katie hit 7 pounds, 1 ounce last night! Growing like a little weed :).

She has had a couple bumps yesterday. Not taking her whole bottle, bradys, and just not waking up for me at 5p!

She's taken her last 4 bottles with no problems (once she fell asleep and 15ml had to be tubed, but that didn't reset her timer).

I forgot to take pics yesterday. But here's some from earlier this week!

I also have a pic comparing the newborn diapers to the small preemies.

Carseat Challenge & Timer Started Now..

Up to 60ml every 3 hours. Nurses got the orders to try every feeding by bottle. Week timer started at 11a. YIKES!!!

She's doing her Carseat Challenge as I type. She has to make it an hour without any Brady's. Nearly 30 minutes in, and going strong! If she does brady, we have to wait 5 days to try it again. Trying to get that step out of the way now :). Wish her luck!

5 in a Row..

Sorry for the late update :).

Katie is doing great! She is up to 6 pounds, 11 ounces. Insane. She's the size of a full term newborn! She moved up to newborn size diapers about a week ago. I'll need to take a picture of her first diapers compared to the newborn ones. Someone remind me!

Yesterday, they increased her feeds from 53ml to 56ml every 3 hours.

The only thing keeping her from being home is mastering the bottle.

Right now she is taking 6 of her 8 feeds a day by bottle (the other two are being given through her NG tube). Anything she doesn't take from the bottle feed is given through her tube as well. As of 11am, she has taken all of her last FIVE bottles! If she keeps this up, they will start giving her a bottle every feeding and remove the tube.

Once she is on all 8 feeds a day by bottle, she has to go a week without any Brady/desats. Then she can come home.

Once she is on all bottle feeds, any time she has a Brady/desat, it will push her back another week. She has to MASTER taking a bottle before they'll send her home.

That means.. with each bottle she takes completely, without any brady/desat, she is potentially 7 days from coming home. Terrifying.

Ron and I have both been sick this week. I've seen her for 20 minutes (on Tuesday, before the weather got really bad, and before we realized we were sick!) since Sunday. I miss her so much, but I'd rather be missing her than making her get sick.

Here's a bunch of pics I have had stored on my phone since the last update!

100 Days!

Katie is up to 2740 grams (6 pounds!!). She does NOT like to take a bottle for her nurses. They are going to do a barium swallow on her tomorrow morning to see if thickening her milk will help her take it.

Sleepy, 100-day old Katie, smiling at mommy after taking half her bottle:

More smiles! I can't help but share them :).

Tiny update.. LOTS of pics!

Katie is up to 5 pounds, 12 ounces! They increased her feeds to 47ml. She is still working on taking a bottle. Apparently she did REALLY well for us last Wednesday when she took the whole bottle. Today we finally got her to take around 40! Se had only been taking anywhere from 4ml-28ml since Wednesday. She is getting the remainder through her feeding tube over 30 minutes. Here are a bunch of pictures!

"Look what I can do!!"

5 pounds, 8.5 ounces. Feeds bumped up to 44ml. And now, they're being given by bottle.

Speech could only get her to take 8ml at 11:00a. They then put in orders saying the nurses should give her bottle feeds for every feeding. Anything she doesn't take will be given to her via her NG tube. The nurse got her to eat 20ml at her 2:00p feeding.

I was there for her 5:00p. And loved EVERY minute of it!

Before her feed (sleepy.. "leave me alone"):

Once I told her she was getting a bottle (it's dark, but you can see her smiling!):

Not the best picture of me, but still:

Be sure to change the quality to 1080 HD :).

She took THE WHOLE THING. Not a drop left in the bottle. I got 3 man-sized burps out of her, then she was out like a light:

She needs to consistently take all her feeds for two days until they will remove her NG tube. After that, I recall someone (don't take my word for it, we'll need to get that verified by a doctor!) saying two weeks of bottle-only feeds (while tolerating the feeds and gaining weight).. and she's home.

Ring Pic :)

News!

Katie is doing great! She is up to 2465 grams (5 pounds, 7 ounces). She is starting to not fit any of her preemie clothes! Ron and I washed all of our consignment sale goodies, and brought up a handful of NEWBORN clothes. So exciting!

They haven't tried her on a bottle since Friday, but they did increase her feeds to 42ml every 3 hours, over the course of 1 hour.

Friday they had decreased her flow to 1.5 liters, and she was doing great. She has been in the habit of moving her head around until the nasal prongs would come out of her nose. She was doing so well even with them not in her nose..

They decided to take them off altogether!!
